Las Cruces Settles for $20M in Fatal Police Shooting Case

The city of Las Cruces, New Mexico, has agreed to a $20 million settlement with the family of Teresa Gomez, who was fatally shot by police officer Felipe Hernandez in October 2023. Hernandez, who was charged with second-degree murder and later fired, allegedly shot Gomez as she attempted to drive away. The city expressed condolences to Gomez's family, and her relatives hope the settlement prompts efforts to prevent future incidents of police misconduct. Hernandez's trial is set for June 2.
