Texas Governor Signs Bill Restricting Transgender Athletes in College Sports Based on Biological Sex

Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill into law that bans transgender athletes from participating on collegiate sports teams aligned with their gender identities. The new law, which takes effect in September, builds on legislation passed in the state in 2021 that banned trans women and girls in K-12 schools from participating on sports teams aligned with their gender identities. At least 16 other states have similar restrictions on trans athletes participating in collegiate sports, and at least 22 states have bans on K-12 trans athletes from participating on sports teams consistent with their gender identity.
