Authorities in Florida are warning beachgoers not to call 911 about mounds of writhing sea creatures on the beaches, as they are likely a herd of manatees engaging in group sex. Manatees mate in herds near the shore, and while their behavior may appear distressing, it is a natural part of their reproductive cycle. Pushing them back into the water is considered manatee harassment and can be dangerous for both the manatees and humans. Manatees have special protections as a federally threatened species.
