Surf Swells Cause Traffic Chaos on North Shore

A larger-than-expected northwest swell caused traffic disruptions on Hawaii's North Shore, while providing excitement for surfers and concerns for oceanfront homeowners. Despite ongoing disputes between homeowners and the state Department of Land and Natural Resources over beach erosion, the recent swell did not cause significant damage. However, the unpredictable nature of storms in the North Pacific means future risks remain uncertain. The high tides pushed sand and debris onto roads, making travel hazardous for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. Despite the challenges, lifeguards were able to assist 19 people to safety, mostly surfers, in the heavily patrolled bay.
