Rebuilding Brookhaven Police Department: Expert Evaluators' Opinion

An independent expert evaluation of the Brookhaven Police Department in Mississippi has found that the department is in need of rebuilding due to a severe manpower shortage, a confusing command structure, a lack of officer training, competency issues in its investigations unit, and a lack of integration with prosecutors' offices. The expert recommended the creation of a police committee within the Board of Aldermen, an appointed chief of police, and changes to hiring practices, disciplinary policies, case management, and general policies and procedures. The findings will be considered by city leaders in the coming weeks.
