"Michigan State Trooper Killed in I-75 Traffic Stop Tragedy"

Michigan State Police trooper Joel Popp, 39, was fatally struck by an 81-year-old driver while conducting a traffic stop on northbound Interstate 75 near Birch Run. Popp, who joined MSP in January 2020, was outside his patrol vehicle when the driver struck him and two patrol cars. He was taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The other driver sustained serious injuries but is expected to survive. Popp is survived by his wife and young daughter, and his death marks the 56th MSP trooper killed in the line of duty.
