"Edward Caban Makes History as New York's First Latino Police Commissioner"

Edward Caban, a Puerto Rican transit police detective's son, has become the first Latino officer to lead the New York Police Department in its 177-year history. Mayor Eric Adams appointed Caban as the 46th commissioner, following the resignation of Keechant Sewell after 18 months. Caban, who had been serving as acting police commissioner, will oversee approximately 36,000 officers and 19,000 civilian employees. His appointment comes at a critical time for the department, as it faces challenges in rebuilding public trust and implementing reforms.
