"APD Identifies Man Who Died by Suicide During Police Encounter"

Matthias Wynkoop died by suicide during an encounter with Albuquerque police, who had been called to a suicide call. Wynkoop shot and killed himself after officers fired at him when he pointed a gun. The Office of the Medical Investigator confirmed that Wynkoop's self-inflicted gunshot was the cause of death, and the autopsy did not reveal any other bullets. Police had previous encounters with Wynkoop, including an incident in October where another agency used the red flag law to confiscate several of his guns.
