Sacramento Honors 9/11 Victims with Remembrance Events and Volunteer Efforts

Retired Sacramento firefighters Rick Martinez and Arthur Gonsalves reflect on their experiences as part of the search and rescue efforts at ground zero after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. They recall the overwhelming and surreal scenes they encountered, the grueling recovery work they performed for weeks, and the emotional impact of not finding any surviving firefighters. Both men consider themselves fortunate to have only minor health concerns compared to many other first responders. Their sons, inspired by their fathers' service, have followed in their footsteps and become firefighters themselves.
