Tragic Escape Attempt Claims Life of Dedicated Deputy

Marion County Sheriff's Deputy John Durm, a 38-year veteran of the department, was attacked and killed by an inmate during an escape attempt at the Indianapolis Adult Detention Center. The inmate, Orlando Mitchell, allegedly stole a transport van, crashed it, and was taken into custody. Durm's wife, who also works at the sheriff's department, and their four children are devastated by the loss. Mitchell, who was in custody for murder charges, will be arrested for Durm's murder once he is released from the hospital.
