Susan Smith Denied Parole 30 Years After Infamous Child Murders

Susan Smith, who was convicted of murdering her two young sons in 1994, was denied parole by a South Carolina board, citing the severity of her crime and her poor institutional record. Smith, who has served 30 years of her life sentence, expressed remorse and attributed her actions to untreated mental health issues. Her ex-husband, David Smith, and others opposed her release, emphasizing the lasting trauma caused by her actions and her initial false claims of a carjacking by a Black man, which heightened racial tensions. Smith will be eligible for parole consideration again in two years.
