Attorneys representing the family of Stephen Smith, who was found dead on the side of a road in South Carolina in 2015, have announced that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has ruled his death as a homicide. The family has launched an online fundraiser to independently exhume and examine Smith's body, which has raised over $80,000. The case was reopened in June 2021, but no suspects have been officially named. The Murdaugh family name has come up several times in investigative files, but Buster Murdaugh has denied any involvement in Smith's death.
