The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the death of Stephen Smith, a 19-year-old nursing student whose body was found in the middle of a South Carolina road in 2015, as a homicide. Smith's death was initially deemed a hit-and-run, but there were no indications in the investigation that it was. Smith's body had blunt force trauma to the head, and his shoes were both on and loosely tied, with no evidence suggesting he was struck by a vehicle. His vehicle was found about three miles away, with the gas tank door open and the gas cap hanging out on the side of the car.
