Stephen Smith's Death Investigated as Homicide Following Implication of Murdaughs.

Stephen Smith's mother wrote a letter to the FBI in 2016 implicating the Murdaugh family in her son's death, which was initially ruled a hit-and-run. Sandy Smith and South Carolina Highway Patrol officers disagreed with the autopsy report's conclusion. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Agency opened a homicide investigation into Smith's death in June 2021, and SLED Chief Mark Keel recently told Smith's lawyers that the agency believes Smith was the victim of an intentional homicide. The 2016 letter alleges that the Murdaughs were involved in Smith's death and a subsequent cover-up. Buster Murdaugh denies any involvement in Smith's death.
