"Record Low Homicides: Detroit Nears 60-Year Milestone"

Detroit is on track to record its lowest number of homicides in nearly 60 years, with a decrease of 18% compared to last year. The city has recorded 228 homicides as of November 30, 2023. Nonfatal shootings are down 13% and carjackings are down 36% compared to the same time last year. The reduction in violence is attributed to a coordinated effort among city, state, and county officials, which included reducing felony gun case backlogs, increasing staffing for law enforcement agencies, improving coordination between prosecutors and police, and implementing a joint fugitive apprehension unit. While overall crime is declining, some precincts still struggle with an increase in violent crime.
