Mysterious Death of Priest Under Investigation by Washington County Sheriff's Office

The Washington County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a Catholic priest, Fr. Stephen Gutgsell, who was found injured after an attempted break-in at the rectory of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Calhoun. A Black male suspect was taken into custody, and the priest later died from his injuries at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha. The sheriff's office has not released the suspect's name or the manner of Gutgsell's death. The Archdiocese of Omaha is praying for Gutgsell and his family, and the church is temporarily closed.
