Leonard Glenn Francis, known as Fat Leonard, believed he was about to be released from Venezuelan custody and gain his freedom after evading U.S. officials for 15 months. However, it was a ruse orchestrated by Venezuelan security officials to prevent him from legally contesting his transfer back to U.S. custody. Instead, Francis was flown to the Caribbean island of Canouan and handed over to U.S. officials as part of a prisoner swap. He is now locked up in a federal prison in Miami and is expected to be transferred to San Diego to finally be sentenced for his role in a major corruption case involving bribery and fraud in the U.S. military.
