Former FBI Official Sentenced to 4 Years for Assisting Russian Oligarch

Former FBI counterintelligence official, Charles McGonigal, has been sentenced to over four years in prison and fined $40,000 for his involvement in a conspiracy to violate U.S. sanctions on Russia and money laundering. McGonigal worked as a paid informant for Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, who has close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He accepted payments to investigate a rival oligarch and attempted to help Deripaska get off the sanctions list. McGonigal also faces sentencing in February for not reporting $225,000 he received from a foreign intelligence source.
