Federal Charges Filed in Stabbing of Derek Chauvin in Prison Attack

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was stabbed 22 times in a federal prison attack by inmate John Turscak, who admitted that he would have killed Chauvin if not for the quick response of corrections officers. Chauvin, who is serving a 22-year sentence for the murder of George Floyd, was stabbed with an improvised knife in the law library of the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona. Turscak now faces charges of attempted murder, assault, and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. The attack was reportedly motivated by a symbolic connection to the Black Lives Matter movement and the Mexican Mafia gang. Chauvin's attorney expressed disappointment in the prison's failure to prevent the attack, and it is unclear if Chauvin will be moved to a different federal prison.
