Father's Determination: A Tragic Kidnapping and the Pursuit of Justice

Rashad Maleek Trice, the man accused of kidnapping 2-year-old Wynter Cole Smith after attacking her mother in Lansing, is facing federal kidnapping charges. If found guilty of kidnapping resulting in death, Trice could face the death penalty, while a conviction for kidnapping a minor carries a minimum sentence of 20 years in prison. Trice is also facing state charges in Ingham County and Macomb County. Wynter's body was found in an alley three days after she was reported missing. Michigan abolished the death penalty in 1846, and the last execution in the state occurred in 1938. The federal government has carried out 50 executions since 1927, with the Trump administration resuming federal executions in 2020 after a 17-year hiatus.
