Escaped Inmate Fatally Attacks Deputy in Escape Attempt

Inmate Orlando Mitchell allegedly used the chain linking his handcuffs to choke Marion County Sheriff's Deputy John Durm during an escape attempt at the detention center. Mitchell gained control of the sheriff's van but crashed it shortly after. Deputy Durm died from his injuries, while Mitchell was taken into custody. The incident was captured on video, showing Mitchell choking Durm until he stopped moving. Mitchell was in jail on a murder charge for shooting his son's mother outside a daycare in 2022.
