Escaped Hawaii Jail Inmate Dies in Hit-and-Run

Matthew J. Ornellas Jr., a man who escaped from a Hawaii jail, was struck by a vehicle and died from his injuries. He fled from Kauai Community Correctional Center, scaled a fence with razor wire, and was seriously hurt in a hit-and-run. Ornellas, 33, was a minimum-security inmate serving time for a drug conviction. The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is continuing to investigate the escape, and police are searching for the driver who left the scene before first responders arrived.
