Deputy Fatally Attacked and Van Stolen in Indianapolis Escape Attempt

A Marion County Sheriff's deputy, John Durm, has died after being attacked by a prisoner who stole a jail van and attempted to escape the Marion County Jail in Indianapolis. The suspect crashed the van into a telephone pole after fleeing the Criminal Justice Center complex. Durm, who had been with the sheriff's department for nearly 40 years, was declared deceased at the hospital. The suspect, identified as Orlando Mitchell, will be arrested for murder once released from the hospital. The incident is being investigated as an intentional act of homicide.
