Michigan Man Convicted of Illegally Diverting River at Sleeping Bear Dunes

A 63-year-old man from Michigan was convicted of diverting the Platte River through Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore by hand, causing environmental and financial harm. The diversion created unauthorized access for large boats, leading to an influx of fishermen and altering the landscape. The man faces a maximum of six months in prison, a $5,000 fine, 5 years probation, and mandatory restitution. While the diversion had negative ecological impacts, it also lowered upstream water levels, solved a public safety concern, and made a clearer path for Coho salmon. The National Park Service's planned project to remove dredging debris is on hold.
