The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released a report stating that the plane crash that killed Christian diet guru Gwen Shamblin Lara, her husband Joe Lara, and six others in Tennessee in May 2021 was caused by the pilot's "spatial disorientation." The pilot lost control of the Cessna 501 during a climb due to somatogravic illusion, a type of spatial disorientation that occurs when pilots have unreliable or unavailable external visual references. The report noted that the pilot likely did not effectively use his instrumentation during takeoff and climb. The recovered wreckage showed no signs of mechanical issues.
