Prince William reportedly used the fake name "Steve" while attending the University of St. Andrews to avoid unwanted attention. Although he officially enrolled under the name William Wales, his classmates used the nickname "Steve" to talk about him without the media picking up on it. This allowed him to have a more normal college experience. Prince William has had other nicknames throughout his life, including "Wombat," which was given to him by his mother, Princess Diana.
