His best-selling biography of Frank Sinatra, "The Way You Wear Your Hat," was just one of many works that made his subjects seem as familiar as next-door neighbors. Zehme's Midwestern charm helped him cultivate recalcitrant sources, and his portraits were not hagiography, but neither were they tell-alls. He remained close to some of the subjects he interviewed, including Sinatra and Hugh Hefner.
