Noya, along with her grandmother and nearly 200 other hostages, was taken by Hamas on October 7. Rowling expressed her hope for their safe return and called the act despicable and unjustifiable. The Israeli military confirmed that at least 199 hostages were taken back to Gaza. The delay in the Israeli ground invasion may have provided extra time to save hostages, while Gazans are being blocked from fleeing to safety. Six Britons were killed in the attacks, with 10 others missing, including Noya and her father.
