Teun Toebes, a 24-year-old nursing home carer, has chosen to live in a dementia ward at a nursing home in the Netherlands to experience life with dementia and improve the lives of the residents. Toebes has published a book, "The Housemates: Everything One Young Student Learnt about Love, Care and Dementia from Living in a Nursing Home," which sheds light on the often-grim reality of Western dementia care. He advocates for a shift in how people with dementia are viewed and treated, emphasizing the importance of person-centered care and a balance between safety and quality of life.
