Mixed Reviews for Guy Ritchie's Action-Packed War Film 'The Covenant'

Guy Ritchie's new film "The Covenant" is a departure from his usual quirky crime and comedy, but the director's clashing sensibilities make for a muddled Afghanistan war film. The story follows an Army sergeant and an Afghan interpreter on the run from the Taliban, with the interpreter going to extraordinary lengths to save the American soldier. While the journey is gripping, long stretches elsewhere in the film drag and it feels much longer than two hours. Jake Gyllenhaal and Dar Salim give strong performances, but the emotional depth of the characters is not fully realized.
