Lionsgate's John Wick: Chapter 4 was released in Russia through a non-sanctioned distributor, Unicorn Media Limited, despite Hollywood's boycott of the country following its invasion of Ukraine. The movie posted a record debut of $4.3M, the biggest Hollywood tentpole to play theaters in Russia since the boycott began. Lionsgate had prior contracts and obligations to meet, and worked with the U.S. State Department to get the movie released. The studio has paused new business with Russia but is honoring previously existing contracts with unsanctioned parties. Despite the lack of major studio movies, Russia's box office has been fairly healthy.
