Hollywood's Diversity Study Reveals Disproportionate Representation and Stalled Progress

A diversity report from USC's Annenberg Inclusion Initiative reveals that Universal's film "Bros" accounted for 80% of transgender characters in the top-grossing movies of 2022. The study found that only 2.1% of speaking or named characters in 2022 movies were LGBTQ+, with just five characters identifying as transgender. The report highlights the lack of progress in LGBTQ+ representation and inclusion in Hollywood, as well as the underrepresentation of characters with disabilities. It also notes marginal improvements in on-screen representation for underrepresented racial/ethnic groups and no significant improvements in inclusion for women directors, writers, or producers. However, there was a significant increase in women composers on popular films.
