Lupita Nyong’o wore a custom silver breastplate to the Tony Awards, designed by Pakistani artist Misha Japanwala, which provided a provocative illusion of exposure and gilded commentary on body positivity. Breastplates were first seen on fashion runways over 50 years ago, and in their original form, they date back millennia further still, created as stylized armor for wealthy warriors in ancient Greece. Japanwala's work presents a very different picture, highlighting a variety of body shapes and pushing back against homogenous beauty standards.
