Controversial Netflix docudrama sparks rival production with light-skinned lead.

An Egyptian broadcaster, Al Wathaeqya channel, has announced the production of its own high-end documentary about Cleopatra, following the controversy over Netflix's Black-led docudrama about the Egyptian ruler. The debate stems from the contested nature of real-life Cleopatra’s racial identity, with the Egyptian antiquities ministry stating that Cleopatra had “white skin and Hellenistic characteristics”. Queen Cleopatra, executive produced and narrated by Jada Pinkett Smith, portrays the Egyptian ruler as a Black British actor, Adele James.
