Lebo M Sues Learnmore Jonasi Over Circle of Life Translation

Grammy-winning composer Lebohang Morake (Lebo M) has filed a federal lawsuit in Los Angeles accusing comedian Learnmore Mwanyenyeka (Learnmore Jonasi) of deliberately mistranslating the Circle of Life chant from Zulu/Xhosa in a podcast and stand-up routine, alleging damage to his reputation and royalties. The suit seeks over $20 million in actual damages and $7 million in punitive damages, arguing that Jonasi presented translations as fact rather than satire. Jonasi says his critique aims to spark discussion about portrayals of Africa and has expressed a willingness to educate audiences.
