The involuntary manslaughter charges against Alec Baldwin in the Rust shooting have been dropped due to a malfunction with the prop gun he was holding, which discharged a fatal shot at cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021. The gun was found to be mechanically improper, with worn joints and a malfunctioning trigger control, leading prosecutors to conclude that it could fire without pressure on the trigger. Although the charges are being dismissed, a follow-up investigation will continue. Baldwin thanked his wife and lawyer in an Instagram post. The charges against Rust's weapons supervisor, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, are still in place.
