Sumner Tunnel Shutdown: Massachusetts Officials Prepare for Traffic Nightmare

Massachusetts transportation officials are urging drivers to find alternative modes of transportation to avoid traffic caused by the eight-week closure of Boston's Sumner Tunnel. While congestion was initially light, officials expect the upcoming week to be the true test. The closure impacts commuters from East Boston, the North Shore, and Logan Airport. The MBTA is offering free rides on the Blue Line and discounted parking and ferry rides as alternatives. Diversions have been implemented to ease airport traffic and handle congestion at the Tobin Bridge. The tunnel, originally built in 1934, is undergoing a complete overhaul, including upgrades to ventilation, drainage, security, and fire suppression systems. Construction crews have already removed 100% of the suspended ceilings and will now focus on chipping out concrete and preparing for precast arch construction.
