5G Airlines Deadline: Potential Disruptions and Minimal Impact Predicted

Starting this weekend, wireless providers are expected to activate new 5G systems near major airports, potentially causing disruptions to flights. While concerns have been raised about 5G signals interfering with aircraft equipment, especially radio altimeters used for landing in low visibility, most major U.S. airlines claim to be prepared. However, Delta Air Lines has 190 planes that lack upgraded altimeters due to supply chain issues, although the airline does not anticipate canceling any flights. The Federal Communications Commission granted wireless carriers licenses for the C-Band spectrum, dismissing interference risks, but a compromise was reached to delay the rollout near 50 busy airports. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg warned that flights could be disrupted for planes without retrofitted altimeters, urging airlines to adjust schedules accordingly.
