Rising Literacy Challenges Among U.S. Adults

A recent survey by the National Center for Education Statistics reveals a significant increase in the number of U.S. adults with low literacy skills, rising from 19% in 2017 to 28% in 2023. This widening gap between high-skilled and low-skilled individuals is notable, although the U.S. remains relatively stable compared to other countries, many of which also experienced declines. The survey assesses literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving skills across over two dozen countries, primarily OECD members.
