Thefts of certain Hyundai and Kia models have surged by over 1,000% since 2020, largely due to social media posts demonstrating how to steal these cars using the metal tip of a USB cable. Older models from 2015 to 2019 without electronic immobilizers are particularly at risk. The trend has led to a significant increase in insurance claims and some insurers are now refusing to cover these models. Hyundai and Kia have responded by agreeing to a $200 million settlement and are taking steps to improve anti-theft measures, including software upgrades and distributing steering locks.
